Atascadero Residents Without Natural Gas After Water Main Break

natural-gas-burnerApproximately 1,000 Southern California Gas Company (SoCalGas) customers near downtown Atascadero are without natural gas this morning in an outage that could last several days.

Around 10 a.m. yesterday, a water main break at the intersection of Entrada and Lewis avenues damaged a neighboring gas line, and water entered the gas company’s pipeline system. This caused the gas to be shut off to businesses and residents in the area from El Camino Real north to Sycamore Road, and from Highway 41 west to Traffic Way.

The water line was repaired by early Sunday afternoon. And the water is safe to use. However, water that got into the gas lines will need to be flushed out, and gas regulators damaged by the water will need to be replaced –  a process that could take several days to complete.

In an e-mail to the Tribune SoCalGas company spokesperson Denise King said Customers may smell gas as crews purge the water from the lines, however the gas company says the area is secured and safe.  Customers with questions can call (661) 699-5089.
