Land Conservancy of SLO Has Closed Escrow of Pismo Preserve

The Land Conservancy of San Luis Obispo County has officially closed escrow and taken ownership of the Pismo Preserve as of yesterday. In addition to raising an unprecedented $12.3 million in just over six months to purchase the property and make initial site improvements, The Land Conservancy has finalized all the paperwork and legal agreements required to permanently conserve the property for community benefit.

Road Safety Tips

We have a couple of road safety tips for you. Beginning today, a new bike safety law goes into effect. When you pass a cyclist, you’ll have to stay three feet from them or face a fine of anywhere from 35 to 200 dollars. Hit one and it may cost you a thousand dollars.

And there’s a child seat check happening tomorrow at Target in San Luis Obispo from 10 to 2. Certified child passenger safety technicians will be available to check your child’s car seat and make sure it’s properly installed.

Rainwater Catching Training Course

There is a two day rainwater catching training course going on starting today at the Ludwig community Center in San Luis. Classes are from 8-5. Participants will learn about rainwater harvesting, system designs, how to install the systems, how to sanitize the water, guidelines, and much more. The course will focus on the central and southern coast because of the drought.

Domestic Violence Incident Results in Arrest

Saturday at 2:18 p.m., Grover Beach Police Officers were dispatched to 1001 Pacific Blvd in Grover Beach for a report of a domestic violence incident occurring. Upon the officer’s arrival they determined that 36-year-old Nicolas J. Lopez of Grover Beach had already fled the scene on foot, but was responsible for choking and punching a woman multiple times causing injuries to her. Lopez was also responsible for vandalizing a residence and vehicle prior to the officer’s arrival.

Officers conducted a search of the area for Lopez and located him hiding in the bushes along Highway 1 near the Grover Beach Train Depot. ECOSLO Announces Coastal Cleanup Day

The Environmental Center of San Luis Obispo (ECOSLO) is proud to announce the 30th annual California Coastal Cleanup Day (CCD), on Saturday, September 20th, from 9 AM to Noon. The Cleanup is an international event, and the State’s largest single effort to remove the debris that has accumulated on our beaches and inland shorelines over the past year. Each year tens of thousands of community members volunteer to protect the marine wildlife and habitat that can be badly damaged by marine debris.

ECOSLO has been organizing CCD since 2005. Last year, over 1,600 volunteers removed over 5,700 pounds of marine debris from over 54 miles of beach throughout San Luis Obispo County. We believe that this year’s cleanup will be even larger and more successful. Many groups Read More »

The Food Bank Coalition’s 6th annual Hunger Walk will take place Saturday, September 20th at our now single location in Morro Bay. Registration is now available through the Food Bank’s website, so sign-up and start gathering donations today! Join the fun, bring the family, form a team, all while helping people in your community who are in need. The Food Bank can provide $10 worth of food for every $1 you raise!
Your fundraising efforts for the Hunger Walk will directly help the 44,000 residents in San Luis Obispo County who live near or below the federal poverty income level and as a result battle hunger.

Brush Fire in Paso Robles

On Thursday, 6:07 PM, Paso Robles firefighters responded to a vegetation fire in the Salinas Riverbed near the 13th Street bridge. First arriving firefighters found a wind driven vegetation fire burning in the riverbed towards 13th Street.

The fire was contained to one acre at approximately 7:20 PM after several spot fires in front of the fire were extinguished. No structures were damaged by the fire. No firefighter or civilian injuries were reported.

Safety Enhancement Zone in Effect on Sunday

The Safety Enhancement Zone will go into effect at 12:01 am on Sunday, September 14 and conclude on Monday, September 29 at 7:00 am. Adopted by the City Council in August 2013, this Safety Enhancement Zone Ordinance helps address the adverse behaviors that were becoming increasingly prevalent with the start of the Cal Poly fall quarter which created a significant threat to public health and safety.

Sobriety and License Checkpoint on September 26

The Cal Poly University Police Department will conduct a sobriety and driver’s license checkpoint on Friday, September 26, 2014 on the Cal Poly campus. Traffic flowing through the checkpoint will be contacted by uniformed officers who will be checking for alcohol and/or drug-impaired drivers. Officers will also check to make sure all drivers have a valid driver’s license.

Missing Man Found Safe This Morning

In the early morning hours of Thursday the San Luis Obispo Police Department was notified of a critical missing person in the area of the 400 block of Bluerock.

Art Armstrong, an 84 years old resident of San Luis Obispo with dementia, went missing last night about 7. He was found safe this morning.
