Sex Offender Arrested for Parole Violation


On October 14 at approximately 8 o’clock, an alert citizen near Sinsheimer Elementary School noticed a suspicious male walking in front of the school. The citizen recognized the subject as Robert Menendez who is a PC 290, registered sex offender. This citizen printed a photo of Menendez on the Megan’s Law Website and confirmed the subject was in fact Menendez. The San Luis Obispo Police Department and State Parole Office were notified of Menendez’s whereabouts. He was last seen in the area of Augusta and Laurel Lane.

Halloween Sailing Trip With ECOSLO


Join The Environmental Center of San Luis Obispo (ECOSLO) for a fun sailing trip on Halloween.  Sail aboard the Chablis Riverboat stationed in Morro Bay from 6 to 8 pm on Halloween, October 31st (costumes are not required).

Two Brush Fires Yesterday


At approximately 12:30 am on 10/13/14 the San Luis Obispo City Fire Department (SLOFD) responded to a report of 2 separate fires burning in the vegetation along the Union Pacific Railroad right-of-way just North of Orcutt Rd.  The first 2 arriving Engine companies found a 500 sq.ft. area of vegetation burning, and another railroad maintenance debris pile burning a few hundred yards away.  As units were extinguishing those known locations, an additional set of fires were reported burning near Sinsheimer Stadium.  An 3rd Engine company responded and found 2 trash bins burning at separate locations within the complex.  As these locations were brought under control, a fourth location with 2 fires burning was found in the eucalyptus-lined creek that runs along the South side of the sc

Santa Maria Police Look for Bank Robbers


Santa Maria police are looking for two and possibly three bank robbers who may have committed a total of ten armed robberies in the area in the past two weeks. The latest two occurred this past Saturday night at convenience stores in Orcutt and Santa Maria.  Police continue to investigate.

Early Warning System Testing


The Early Warning System sirens around SLO County will be tested today and tomorrow. Each of the 131 sirens will sound for just a few seconds. The sirens cover an area from Cayucos to Nipomo and are intended to be used in the case of a variety of natural or man-made disasters.

Motorcycle Accident Lands One Man in Hospital


At about 1:27 p.m., yesterday, the Grover Beach Police Department received a 911 call reporting a motorcycle vs. vehicle collision in the area of N.4th St. / Atlantic City Ave. Grover Beach Police Officers, Firefighters and San Luis Ambulance paramedics responded to the scene where they located a 2006 Kawasaki motorcycle had collided with a 1985 Volkswagen Van.

The male motorcyclist driver was suffering from debilitating injuries; he was extricated from being partially underneath the vehicle by the emergency responders. The male was transported to the Arroyo Grande Community Hospital for treatment and later to Marian Medical Hospital. The motorcycle driven was a total loss. The occupants in the vehicle were not injured.  A cause for the collision is still under investigation

Fatal Accident Involving Pedestrian


On October 11, 2014 just after 8 PM an Atascadero Police Officer was in the area of Morro Rd and Atascadero Ave just after a pedestrian had been struck by a vehicle in the roadway. Emergency personnel responded and arrived on scene a short time later. Personnel from the Atascadero Fire Department and the San Luis Ambulance Company determined the pedestrian had succumbed to his injuries from the collision and was deceased. Members of the Atascadero Police Department Traffic Unit conducted an investigation and determined the pedestrian had unlawfully entered the roadway and was struck by a vehicle. The deceased was identified as Dennis Quick, 62 years of age, of Atascadero.

Fire Prevention Week Underway


With national Fire Prevention Week underway, Pacific Gas and Electric Company (PG&E) and the Fire Safe Council of San Luis Obispo today announced a partnership to help reduce the risk of wildfire in San Luis Obispo County. During an event at the Mt. Lowe communications site near Cuesta Pass, PG&E provided $163,500 to the council to support needed fuel reduction, infrastructure protection and defensible space projects throughout the county. The effort is part of a larger system-wide $5.5 million private, public and community partnership PG&E is funding throughout Northern and Central California aimed at preventing even more fires from sparking during the traditional September-October peak of California wildfire season.

Four People Arrested for Discharging Firearms with Gross Negligence


Yesterday at approximately 3:27 AM officers from the Atascadero Police Department were dispatched to the area of the 11000 block of Halcon Road regarding numerous shots being heard in the area. The shots were described as being in rapid succession and possibly from a rifle. Officers arrived on scene as the shots were still being fired. Officers could hear the rounds impacting something nearby as they were being fired. The officers believed they were being fired at by the suspect(s). Members of the San Luis Obispo County Sheriff’s Office and California Highway Patrol responded to assist and a perimeter was established on the suspected residence. Members of the Atascadero Police Department’s Investigative Unit were notified and responded to the scene as well.
