A local surfer Kevin Swanson of Morro Bay is home recovering after being attacked by a shark Sunday morning. Swanson was surfing with friends near Sand Spit beach in Montana de Oro State Park when a juvenile great white shark bit into his hip. The California Highway Patrol has identified the woman killed in a crash on Highway 101 south of Donovan Road in Santa Maria on Sunday as 25-year-old Ashley Kerr of Santa Maria. Kerr was a passenger in a Blazer driven by 22-year-oldTravis Dashek of Santa Maria. Dashek who was hauling a boat trailer, went off the right side of the highway, struck the sound wall and a large tree, and caught on fire. Dashek and another passenger, 21-year-old Kurt Hixenbaugh, of Santa Maria, were able to get out of the vehicle. They suffered major injuries. Dashek was been arrested. The Winter Holiday Anti-DUI crackdown has resulted in less DUI arrests from local routine traffic enforcement and special Avoid the 14 DUI enforcement deployments overnight in San Luis Obispo County throughout the past week.
From 12:01 AM Friday December 26, 2014 through Midnight Sunday December 28, 2014 officers representing 9 county law enforcement agencies have arrested 11 individuals for driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs. In 2013 27 DUI arrests occurred during the same three day time period.
All regularly scheduled traffic and patrol officers will focus efforts at stopping and arresting DUI drivers during their normal shifts. Multiple Roving DUI enforcement patrols are all part of this region-wide crackdown during the 21 day Winter Holiday Campaign.Read More »
A man was killed on the Oceano Dunes last night. According to officials he was getting something out of his vehicle when another vehicle hit him from behind, pinning him between the two vehicles. He died at the scene. The driver of the car that him said he didn’t see the man or his truck. Officials say no alcohol was involved. The accident is being investigated.
One man was killed and two others injured when the car they were in lost control, hit a guard rail then caught on fire. Officials say the two who were injured escaped, but another was trapped and couldn’t get out and died on scene. The accident happened just after six last night on the southbound lanes of 101 just south of Donovan Road. The CHP is investigating.Read More »
A Morro Bay man is in a hospital after he was bitten by a great white shark yesterday morning about 11:30 off the coast of Montana De Oro. He was surfing with some friends off of Sand Spit Beach. He was attacked by the shark which was 8-10 feet long. He was able to get to shore where he was airlifted to Sierra Vista. His wounds didn’t appear to be life threatening, but his board was visibly chewed. The beach will not be closed, but authorities are posting signs to warn people of the attack.Read More »
Paso Robles Department of Emergency Services firefighters will be conducting live fire training exercises at 2921 Park Street today. The training fire will begin at approximately 9:00 am and end around 4:00 pm. This training will not present any hazard to adjacent residences; however, smoke will be visible in the area from the fire. The purpose of the this event is to provide our firefighters and fire investigators with training in various fire department disciplines including building search, rescue practices, vertical ventilation, forcible entry, fire attack and fire investigation. The San Luis Obispo County Sheriff’s Sexual Assault Felony Enforcement (SAFE) detectives, with assistance from the Arroyo Grande Police Department High Tech Crimes Unit, arrested a man for possession of child pornography on Dec 23rd. Joseph Rizzardi, 48, was taken into custody in Avila Beach without incident, after detectives discovered videos of child pornography on a computer that was traced back to him. Several other computer devices were seized that detectives believe contain similar videos and images of children, with results pending further forensic investigation.Read More »

The CHP has identified the man killed in a crash on Los Osos Valley Road Sunday night. Sixty-five-year-old Mauricio Cardenas of San Luis Obispo was killed after being struck by a car near South Bay Boulevard, about six p.m. Officials say there was no crosswalk in the area, and the driver told officers it was dark and he didn’t see Cardenas in the road.
