Beached Humpback Whale Buried At Oceano Dunes

Humpback-WhaleA young humpback whale is now buried at Oceano Dunes.  The whale washed ashore Guadalupe last week.  She washed back out to sea Thursday and strong currents pushed her back onto the beach in Oceano Tuesday.

She was about 18-months old and 24-feet long.  Scientists say after six months the whales are able to feed on their own and are able to separate from their mother.

They say she could have been hit by a ship, attacked by another animal, or sick.

She was buried by California State Parks maintenance crew above the high tide line.

Marine biologists estimate California's humpback population to be around 2,000.
