IRS Scam Making Rounds in SLO County

Beware of the IRS scam that’s making the rounds again in San Luis Obispo County. This scam is targeting seniors. The Sheriff’s Office has received 8 to 10 reports from people who say they received a phone call from someone who identifies themselves as a representative of the IRS. The caller proceeds to tell them they owe money to the IRS and they must pay promptly through a pre-loaded debit card or wire transfer, or they could face jail time. In many cases, the caller becomes hostile and insulting. And they are especially aggressive. They may call back, even if you hang up on them. Santa Barbara News-Press Building Defaced

The Santa Barbara News-Press building has been defaced with paint and graffiti amid criticism of a recent newspaper headline that used the word “illegals” to describe immigrants who are living in the country illegally. City editor Scott Steepleton said Thursday that the building was paint-bombed overnight. The entrance was also vandalized with graffiti that read: “The border is illegal not the people who cross it.” The newspaper has received criticism since running a story and photo about California allowing immigrants who entered the country illegally being allowed to apply for driver’s licenses. Saturday’s headline read: “Illegals line up for driver’s licenses.”

Cuesta College Board of Trustees Approved Contracts to Begin Measure L Projects

The Cuesta College Board of Trustees recently approved multiple contracts to begin work on Measure L projects. On January 7, 2015, the trustees approved an agreement for on-going architectural services with PMSM Architects and an agreement for ongoing construction management services with Blach Construction. With the passage of the bond in November 2014, the District is now engaged in the design, bidding and construction of works for improvement, consisting generally of the demolition, construction, modernization, and/or alteration of new and existing physical facilities at the District’s two campuses. Man Arrested After Police Find Child Pornography

Detectives with the Sheriff’s Sexual Assault Unit, Sheriff’s Narcotics Unit, and Sheriff’s Gang Task Force served a search warrant at a home located at 2555 Wilcombe Road in Cambria yesterday. Detectives had received information that child pornography was being downloaded and distributed at that location. Detectives searched the residence just after 7 in the morning and located a computer containing child pornography including more than 600 images of pubescent children engaged in sexual acts. There is no evidence the manufacturing of child pornography was being conducted at the residence.

Memorial Services Held for Fallen K9 Unit

Yesterday, the San Luis Obispo County Sheriff’s Office held a memorial service and burial ceremony for Sheriff’s K9 Nico, who passed away on Oct. 1. Nico was assigned to Deputy Steve Faeth on 12-5-2011 and medically retired from the force on 2-1-2014 due to seizures associated with canine epilepsy. Sheriff Parkinson, the Sheriff’s Honor Guard, Sheriff’s K9’s and their handlers and K9’s from other law enforcement agencies in San Luis Obispo and Santa Barbara County were in attendance. A final resting place on a hillside overlooking the Sheriff’s Office has been created for Nico and other K9’s who dedicate their lives in the service of the Sheriff’s Office.

Atascadero Police Search for Stolen Generator

The Atascadero Police Department is seeking information regarding the theft of a generator from a business in Atascadero which occurred on the night of January 4th. During this incident a Honda 6500 generator was stolen. The generator is valued at approximately $6,000.00. The victim business had video surveillance which captured the theft. The department is asking for assistance in identifying the two suspects or vehicle seen in the video. The vehicle used in the theft appears to be an older model Chevrolet/ GMC step side, single cab pickup.   Any questions should be directed to the Watch Commander at (805) 461-5051.

Police Search for Man Who Robbed Domino’s Pizza

On Tuesday night, January 6th, at about 11:32pm, an unidentified Hispanic male adult walked into Domino’s Pizza in Morro Bay and demanded money from the on duty employee. It was reported the employee observed a weapon and an undisclosed amount of cash was stolen. The suspect fled the business and got into a dark colored mini van parked nearby the business.

The suspect is described as a Hispanic male adult, between 30 to 35 years of age, approximately 5’6”, with a stocky build. The vehicle is described as a dark colored mini-van.

The Insurance Services Office (ISO) looks at US communities’ capabilities to extinguish fires. This information is then used to determine the degree of risk when writing property insurance policies. ISO visited Paso Robles six months ago to determine the adequacies of the emergency communications system, water distribution system, and fire department operations. Under a newly revised grading system, ISO found the City to be more capable in meeting fire emergency needs than during its last evaluation one year ago.
