The CHP arrested a man after a short car chase on Highway 166 yesterday. Officers say Juan Lopez attempted to flee when cops tried to pull him over. The 21-year-old Oceano man killed early yesterday morning in a crash on Los Berros Road as Raymond Mendoza. The CHP says his car crossed into oncoming traffic lanes, then slammed into a tree. Officers say Mendoza was speeding and was not wearing a seatbelt, and that alcohol is may be a factor in the crash.Read More »

Lynn Compton defeated incumbent Caren Ray in the race for 4th District Supervisor.
Tommy Gong is the new County Clerk-Recorder.
Tony Ferrara held off write-in challenger Jim Hill to keep his seat as mayor of Arroyo Grande. He’ll be joined by councilmembers Barbara Harmon and Tim Brown.
Tom O’Mally was picked as mayor of Atascadero. Council members Heather Moreno and Brian Sturtevant will sit on the city council.
John Sholes will return as mayor of Grover Beach. On council with him are Barbara Nicolls and Miriam Shah.
Paso Mayor Steven Martin will be joined by council members John Hamon and Duane Picanco.

In Santa Maria last night about 11:52, a Santa Maria man was critically injured in a two car accident at Enos Drive and Miller Street. According to police, 29-year-old Juan Salazar driving a Chrysler collided with 19-year-old Jonathan Lara who was driving a Pontiac. Lara, also from Santa Maria was extricated and taken to the hospital. Salazar who tried to get away was detained by witnesses. Salazar was arrested for felony DUI, hit and run, and driving without a license. He was taken to jail with bail set at $100,000.Read More »
Federal investigators say the co-pilot who died in the test-flight of a space plane made an error causing the crash. The National Transportation Safety Board has confirmed, Michael Alsbury prematurely unlocked a lever that might have caused Virgin Galactic’s SpaceShip Two to raise its tail moments before it broke apart in Southern California Friday.
