City of Pismo Beach Voted to Stop Prayers at City Council Meetings

The City of Pismo Beach voted last night to stop prayers at city council meetings and eliminate the chaplain position as part of a settlement agreement reached with the Freedom From Religion Foundation. The Freedom From Religion Foundation and Dr. Sari Dworkin, a local member of the Atheists United San Luis Obispo, sued the city last November on the grounds that the prayers violated the California Constitution. The city argued that the invocations were non-sectarian. But, City Manager James Lewis said it wasn’t worth spending tax dollars to go to court. The council voted 3-0 on the agreement.
