Co-Habitation On The Rise

Cohabitation-holding-hands-coupleA study finds more people than ever are co-habitating before marriage.

The National Center for Health Statistics surveyed more than 22-thousand men and women between the ages of 15 and 44.  The study found from years 2006 to 2010, 48 percent of the women lived with a partner before getting married.  That’s an 11 percent increase compared to 2002 and a 41 percent increase compared to  1995.

Marriage isn’t always the result of cohabitating.  40 percent of premarital co-habitations transitioned to marriage within three years and 27 percent of relationships ended within five years.

The report found 20 percent of the women became pregnant during their first year living together.
