Emergency Crews Make Water Rescue Near Gaviota Pier

Water-RescueThe Santa Barbara County Fire Department responded to a water rescue yesterday morning.

A 75-year-old man aboard a sailboat, anchored near Gaviota Pier and about 100 yards offshore, reported a medical emergency via a marine radio. 

The Santa Barbara County Fire Department responded at 10:30 AM with three engines, a water rescue team, Santa Barbara County Air Support Unit and a battalion chief.

California State Parks and American Medical Response also assisted the rescue and a Coast Guard helicopter was on standby.

The man was traveling from San Francisco to San Diego.  He was sent to the hospital in an ambulance.

Firefighters towed the sailboat to deeper water and reset the boat’s anchor.  The US Coast Guard was notified to check on the boat.
