On Tuesday, the San Luis Obispo County Sheriff's Office received a call that four hikers in the Diablo Canyon area, reported they were lost. The four men from Riverside County began their day hike in Avila Beach on Monday. They became lost and spent the night in the area. They tried to hike out on Tuesday but were not successful and called 911 on their cell phone at approximately 4:30 p.m.
Approximately 50 people responded to the incident including Sheriff's deputies, Sheriff's Search and Rescue, Cal Fire, Diablo Canyon Fire, Diablo Canyon Security and the CHP.
One of the hikers, David Root, was considered at-risk because he was reportedly suffering from leukemia. During the course of their hike, the men became separated.
Two of the hikers, Todd Wallace and Thomas Baumbach were discovered sitting under a tree at approximately 6:10 p.m. The other two, Ron Jennings and David Root, were found about an hour later walking beside a trail. The four were not injured but complained of being dehydrated. They were treated by medics at the scene.
