High Speed Chase Ends In Crash And Two Arrested

On October 26, at approximately 11:10, Santa Barbara Area CHP attempted to make an enforcement stop for a weaving Ford Expedition traveling on US-101 northbound, just south of Carrillo Street. After being instructed to exit the freeway, the Ford accelerated. The driver, later identified as Christian Mateo Perez, turned right onto eastbound W. Carrillo Street through a red light. Perez accelerated to freeway speeds, maneuvered between traffic, and drove through red lights at cross streets between the freeway and State Street, while fleeing from pursuing officers. Perez failed to negotiate a right turn onto southbound State Street from eastbound W. Carrillo Street. The front of the Ford struck a newspaper vending machine along the east road edge of State Street, just south of Carrillo Street. Perez continued to flee at unsafe speeds, between traffic, along the shoulder, and on the wrong side of the road. Due to the Mr. Perez' extreme recklessness, Officers made the decision to call off the pursuit in the interest of public safety. Perez lost control of the Ford while continuing to flee, allowed it to jump the west curb of State Street, and strike a tree moments later. Officers pulled in behind the disabled Ford. Perez was arrested at the scene. There were four passengers in the Ford consisting of three juveniles. Two juveniles were released to their parents at the scene. One juvenile was arrested for an outstanding warrant and booked into the Santa Barbara County Juvenile Detention Facility in Santa Maria.
