Man Arrested For Recording Women In Assisted Living Residence Restroom

Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Deputies arrested a Buellton man on Tuesday for allegedly recording women using the restroom at an assisted living residence in the Santa Ynez Valley.  Sheriff’s Deputies were contacted immediately by an administrator at the residence after a female employee located a cellular telephone concealed in the ventilation system in a restroom.

Sheriff’s Deputies responded to the location and examined the cellular telephone.  They found numerous videos of staff and residents in various stages of undress while using the restroom facilities.  The owner of the cellular telephone was determined to be 35-year-old Juan Carlos Diaz of Buellton who worked as a custodian at the assisted living residence.  Diaz was arrested while at work at around 3:15 p.m. yesterday and charged with elder abuse and unauthorized recordings.

Sheriff’s Deputies conducted a search of Diaz’s residence and recovered evidence possibly related to additional crimes.  At this point in the investigation, it has been determined that the videos took place over the last several months and occurred in at least two bathrooms at the assisted living residence.  So far, most of the victims appear to be staff members. The evidence obtained in the case has been turned over to the Sheriff’s High-Tech Crime Unit to help determine the exact times and dates the videos were taken and to identify the victims.  The Sheriff’s Office is assisting the facility, who is cooperating with the investigation, with victim’s resources if requested.
Diaz was taken to jail where he was booked and later released.  The case has been turned over to the Santa Barbara County District Attorney’s Office.
