Furry Friend Fridays

Every week Steve Kragenbrink & friends from Woods Humane Society bring in an animal that needs a home.

“Buddy”

This week’s featured Pet Pal is “Buddy”, a 7 year old Brindled American Pit-bull who has been calling Woods Humane Society his home since May. Buddy is neutered, up to date on his vaccinations, micro chipped, and ready to go home. He joined our adoption program through his previous owner who simply couldn’t care for him any longer. He was raised in a family, would do amazingly well with children, and gets along great with other dogs. HE LOVES EVERYONE! Buddy is a very obedient dog that knows all of his obedience commands and also comes packages with a bag of amazing dog tricks (roll over, speak, shake, hi-five, other paw, etc.). One interesting fact about Buddy is that he really doesn’t know that he is a Pit-bull. He was raised with Dachshunds and thus thinks he is a 20lb lap dog. He has never attacked or bitten anyone or anything and unfortunately due to his breed, there is a misconception about how wonderful of a dog Buddy truly is. He loves to go for runs, jogs, walks, hikes, and adventures. Buddy rides great in the car, is easy to walk on a leash, and has joined our shelter’s outreach program on numerous activities out in the community where he met and played with numerous children, people, and other dogs. His previous owners allowed him to be an indoor/outdoor dog but he spend most of his time laying around the back yard, but he does get lonely and tries to find a comfy lap if left alone too long. His favorite things to do are play, go on adventures, and sleep. He is also very treat motivated and extremely easy to handle. The only time his previous owners mention him barking is when he sees a cat. Buddy needs a new home that will have someone to play with him, exercise him, and wrestle with. If you or anyone that you know are looking to adopt an amazing “poster dog” for the pit-bull breed, please consider stopping by the shelter and looking past the pit-bull in Buddy. You wont be sorry and you will soon realize that you are adopting a Dachshund in a Pit-bull costume. Buddy’s previous owners have also left their contact information with us at the shelter should you have any additional questions and our dedicated Animal Care staff have been working with him daily.
Benjamin

We are happy to introduce “Benjamin” as this week’s featured Pet Pal. Benjamin is a 10 month old Irish Wolfhound Mix that has been a guest of Woods Humane Society since May. He was brought to us through a breed rescue, is neutered, up to date on vaccinations, and micro chipped. Benjamin is a great family dog that gets along wonderfully with people and other dogs. He was previously fostered with a family that had children and is a current participant in our shelter’s summer Critter Camp Program. This means he works one on one with a child all week long during Camp. His previous temporary family also included 4 other dogs ranging from small to large. Benjamin is still a puppy but is doing very well with his obedience work and is also learning how to play fetch. He would do very well as an indoor/outdoor dog and enjoys relaxing around the yard chewing on toys and sleeping. He currently knows down, stay, and no barking. Benjamin is a very friendly dog with lots of energy and loves to please. He is very treat motivated and is going to make a wonderful addition to any new family that falls in love with him. If you or anyone you know is looking to “Adopt and Make it for Life”, we ask that you stop by the shelter and spend some time getting to know this great dog in a comfortable “Get Acquainted Room” at the shelter.

“Micki”

Please allow us to introduce “Micki” as this weeks featured friend. Micki is an 8 year old German Shepherd Mix that has been a guest of Woods Humane Society since April. Micki joined our shelter’s adoption program due to her previous owner falling ill and no longer able to care for her. She was raised in the same family since birth. Micki is a great older dog that gets along great with people and other dogs. In fact, she is currently one of our shelter’s Pet Visitation Ambassadors and frequently visits local retirement facilities and participates in our humane education visits to local schools. Micki is very sweet and loves to play, she is spayed, vaccinated, micro-chipped, and house broken. Her previous family also included a couple cats and she doesn’t seem to mind or notice them much at all. She is great at fetch, and also knows her obedience commands of sit, down, and stay. Her previous home had a 4 ft fence and Micki would happily stay within it. She is the dog that just wants to lay outside in the yard, doesn’t wander, and enjoy the beautiful weather of our central coast. She loves to go on adventures, especially to the beach and to the park. Her ideal home would be a fenced yard with other dogs to play with and the ability to live both as an indoor and outdoor companion. Micki would make a great camping partner! If you or someone you know is considering adopting a new furry friend to their family, please stop by Woods and get to know this overlooked diamond in the scruff.

Jose
Please allow us to introduce “Jose” as this week’s featured Pet Pal. Jose’ is a 4 year old Black & White Domestic Medium Hair that has been calling Woods Humane Society his home since January. He originally joined our adoption program as a transfer from the SLO County Department of Animal Services. Jose is micro chipped, neutered, and current on all of his vaccinations. He is looking for a home that is somewhat active and would allow him to live as an indoor/outdoor cat. He gets along just fine with other cats and loves attention from respectful children. Jose’ is also completely litter box trained and is very playful, affectionate, cuddly, social, outgoing, friendly, and tolerant. Jose’ is an easy going and sweet guy who loves to be in a lap and petted. He is quite handsome with medium long fur and beautiful coloring. His two favorite things are getting love and sleeping. If you at looking to bring a new cat with a mellow personality into your life, please consider stopping by Woods Humane Society and spending some time getting to know Jose’. June is the month to adopt an adult cat as we continue to celebrate National Adopt a Shelter Cat Month and all of our adult felines 6months+ are currently available for a reduced adoption fee of only $75. This promotion only has a couple more days (until the 30th) so stop by and find your new furry friend at Woods today.
“Angelo”

Please allow us to introduce “Angelo”, he is a 4 year old black & white Domestic Short Hair that has been calling Woods Humane Society his home since June of 2007. Angelo joined our adoption program as a transfer from the San Luis Obispo Department of Animal Services. He is neutered, vaccinated, micro chipped, and litter box trained. Angelo is an active cat that would prefer to live as an indoor/outdoor cat. He would also be a very likely candidate to earn a job as a mouser. He enjoys the company of other cats and is very gentle around children. Angelo is independent, cuddly, shy, friendly, quiet, reserved, and highly tolerant. He is a very well natured cat that comes off as being shy, however, once he gets to know you he is extremely affectionate and cuddly. If you or anyone that you know is currently looking to open up your heart to a wonderful feline prince, we implore you to stop by the cattery at Woods Humane Society and spend some time getting to know Angelo.

“Boe”

Allow us to introduce “Boe”, he is a 1 year old Stephen’s Cur Hound that has been calling Woods Humane Society his home since March. Boe is up to date on his vaccinations, neutered, and micro chipped. He joined our shelter’s adoption program by his previous owners not being able to care for him any longer. However, his previous owners have left their contact information at the shelter should anyone be interested in learning more about Boe. Boe was brought into the shelter due to chasing cows. He is an amazing little hound that loves the company of people, other dogs, and adores attention from children. Boe was raised on a large property with a cat and pig. The only problem Boe had with the pig was when the pig bit him. He is crate trained and house broken and would do well in a home that would allow him to live both indoor and outdoor. Boe is not an escape artist but being a Stephen’s Cur Hound he does require exercise. He also is familiar with his basic obedience commands and rides great in the car. Some places that Boe like’s to visit is the beach, park, lake, and ranches. Boa is a really amazing dog that is desperately seeking a new family who is active, has kids, and will give him lots of attention. Given the proper placement, this is a highly trainable breed and with his small size would do extremely well with agility. We recommend anyone interested in Boe to take a couple moments and research his breed in order to better understand what his individual needs will be. If you or anyone you know is looking for a great dog in a small package, we implore you to visit Boe out at Woods and spend some time getting to know him in one of our comfortable get acquainted rooms.

“Amigo”

Meet “Amigo”, he is a 3 year old Orange Tabby that has been calling our shelter his home for about a month. Amigo is a large boy that loves attention. He is very social and gets along great with kids and other cats. He would prefer to live as an indoor/outdoor cat but is completely litter box trained. Amigo is neutered, vaccinated and micro chipped. He also has a very distinct personality and is quickly becoming the star of our shelter’s cattery. Amigo joined our adoption program as a transfer from the County Animal Services and is desperately seeking a new family to call his own.

“Axel”

Please allow us to introduce “Axel”, he is a 2 year old Golden Retriever/Corgy X that has called our shelter home since February. Axel is up to date on his vaccinations, micro chipped and neutered. Axel was brought to Woods by his previous owner due to moving out of state and not being able to take him along. He is a fun little guy with a very unique look and loves to play. Axel would do great in an active family and is good around responsible children (he was raised with a 9 year old boy). He also gets along well with other dogs. Axel is housebroken and would prefer to be in indoor/outdoor dog. He isn’t an escape artist, but would still require a small fence to keep him from wandering. Axel is also currently learning his obedience commands and doing very well with the sit and stay. He absolutely loves to be with people and would do well with a family the will spend a lot of time with him and take him on walks, hikes, or adventures. If you or anyone that you know is currently looking to give their hearts to a loving dog, we implore you to visit the shelter and spend some time getting to know Axel outside of his kennel. Also, the shelter is currently in need of canned dog food so pick some up on your way to visit Axel and treat the dogs of Woods to some yummy goodness.

Sandy

Meet “Sandy”, she is a 10 year old Long Hair Dachshund Mix that has called Woods Humane Society her home since February. Sandy joined our adoption program due to her previous owner having health issues and no longer being able to care for her. Sandy is spayed, up to date on her vaccinations, and micro chipped. She is a loving mature lady that is looking for someone to retire with. She is great with other dogs and despite her age, has a lot of energy. She likes to go for walks, to play and romp in the yard, and then nap on the porch or in a loving lap. Sandy is very social and likes attention. Sandy would be a great indoor/outdoor dog and is completely house broken. She isn’t a wanderer and would also be great for a yard with limited fencing. Her previous owner states that she is a “very sweet and loving dog”, “loves people and very kind”, “doesn’t have any bad habits”. Unfortunately for her, Sandy keeps getting overlooked simply due to her age. If you or anyone that you know is looking for a loving companion, please consider stopping by Woods and giving Sandy the chance to live out the rest of her years in the comfort of your home. This dog has a lot of love to give, is VERY playful and fun to be around, and will make some lucky adopter a wonderful companion.

“Mystery”

Meet “Mystery”, he is a 6 year old black domestic medium hair that has been calling Woods Humane Society his home for 300 days and is the cat with the longest current length of stay at the shelter. Mystery joined our adoption program last May due to his previous owner having health problems. He is vaccinated, neutered and micro chipped. Mystery is sleeper-literally! He loves to lay about, but he is also on of the hidden treasures of Woods. He’s a big sweet boy who will let you pet him anywhere, anytime, and never has an attitude. He is extremely gentle and loves to sit in your lap and purrrr. Mystery is completely litter box trained and would prefer to live as an indoor/outdoor cat. He would make a wonderful family cat and gets along great with other cats. Mystery’s previous owner also states that he would be an ideal candidate as a mouser and is a “Good Gopher Hunter”. If you or anyone you know is currently looking to bring a new animal into your life and give an adult cat the chance, we invite you to visit the “Mystery” at Woods Humane Society.

“ROXY”

Meet “Roxy”, she is a Brindled 1.5 year old Pitt Bull/Queensland mix that has called our shelter home since November. Roxy joined our program as a transfer from the San Luis Obispo Animal Services Dpt. And was surrendered to them by her previous owner due to a living situation where pets are not allowed. Roxy is a spayed, up to date on her vaccinations, and micro chipped. She is a very well-mannered, sweet, loveable, calm, playful dog that gets along great with other K9s and would also do well with children over 7 years old. She is housebroken, crate trained, and is familiar with her basic obedience commands. Roxy’s previous owners used to take her on long walks, runs, and to local off-leash dog parks on a consistent basis. The volunteers who have worked with Roxy throughout her stay have all commented on how easy she is to work with, and how desperate she wants to please. Roxy is a great dog that will make some lucky adopter a wonderful companion. Unfortunately for her, she is mixed with Pit Bull and this tends to keep potential adopters from wanting to get to know her better. If you or anyone you know is looking for a great dog that will make a wonderful addition to your family, please take some time getting to know Roxy outside of her kennel in one of our comfortable “get acquainted rooms”.

“Scooter”

Meet “Scooter”, he is a 3 year old Orange Domestic Short Hair Tabby that has called Woods Humane Society his home since January. Scooter joined our adoption program as a transfer from the San Luis Obispo County Animal Services. He is neutered, up to date on his vaccinations, micro chipped, and completely litter box trained. This is a truly amazing cat that loves people, attention, and gets along great with other cats. He is definitely a lap cat and wants nothing more than to be held and snuggled. In fact, he wants to be in your arms so badly, that he will follow you around and then stand on his hind legs while gently stretching his paws up your leg as if to say “hold me, hold me, hold me”. Scooter is very affectionate and has a loud soothing purrrrrr. He is also a very tolerant cat with a mild demeanor. Recently, Scooter joined us on a humane education visit to Teach Elementary School in San Luis Obispo. He is the first cat to join us in our humane education outreach and to our surprise, was incredible! He hopped out of his carrier, took a kitty tour around our elective’s classroom, and then proceeded to go up and get love and snuggles from each student. Scooter is truly a one of a kind cat and desperately deserves a warm loving home to call his own. If you or anyone that you know is currently looking to bring a new cat into your life, we implore you to take a moment and spend some time getting to know Scooter (or any of his catterymates out here at the Woods Humane Society Cattery). We guarantee that you will instantly fall for this little prince and that he would make a wonderful addition to your family.

Daisy

Meet “Daisy”, she is a 5 year old Bloodhound that has been calling Woods Humane Society her home since December. Daisy was brought to Woods by her previous owners who had raised her since she was a pup. Her previous family was in the middle of an extensive remodel and Daisy was getting into too much mischief around the construction. She grew up in a family with kids and absolutely loves to play with children. Daisy is very friendly and highly energetic, she loves other dogs, gets along great with cats, but thinks that chickens are very interesting (possibly food). Daisy is well mannered, doing great with her obedience training out at the shelter, and enjoys playing with other dogs and people. She would be best for a family with responsible children over 7 years old. Her previous owners did not let Daisy into the house but she could easily become a lap dog and house broken with crate training. Daisy is a loving, gentle, beautiful dog that needs attention to keep her out of trouble, and a family that will take her on adventures to the beach, park, or on a hike. Her ideal family is active and understanding of the Bloodhound as Daisy is pure Hoooouunnnd! If you or anyone you know is looking for a fun loving dog share your time and heart with, please give Daisy a shot at your heart and get to know her out here at

Figero

Please allow us to introduce “Figero”, he is a 7 year old black & white Domestic Medium Hair (DMH) who has been calling our shelter home since April 06’. Figero is a good boy who just wants attention! He is extremely gentle toward people, but doesn’t mind the company of other cats. Figero is cute and loveable and would be a great indoor/outdoor cat in a loving home, possibly with children. He is neutered, micro chipped, and up to date on his vaccinations. Figero is also a very clean cat and always uses his litter box. If you or anyone you know is interested in providing a loving home to one (or more) of the truly amazing felines that are currently calling Woods Humane Society home, we implore you to stop in and visit with them. Pictures can never fully do any of the animals any justice. Figero was previously featured on our Friday Morning Media Run around this time last year. It is our goal that this time around, he will find that special someone and finally go to a much deserved loving home. Figero is currently the cat with the longest length of stay at Woods. Please rescue this loving little guy.

“Jack”

Meet “Jack”, he is a 3 year old white & black Pointer Mix that has been calling Woods Humane Society his home since October of last year. Jack is neutered, up to date on his vaccinations, micro chipped, and desperately needing to find a loving home. He is the dog that has currently been with us for the longest period of time. Jack is very outgoing, energetic, lovable, playful, vocal, and great with other dogs. He would do best in a family with an enclosed yard, and allowed to be both an indoor and outdoor dog. He is also great with responsible kids over 7 years of age. Jack has also been an ambassador for our shelter on numerous outreach events in our community and has also participated in our shelter’s pet visitation and humane education visits. Jack joined our adoption program as a transfer from the SLO County Animal Services Department and has since been working one on one with our professional onsite K9 trainer. Her currently knows sit, down, & stay. Jack is a great dog that loves people and attention, unfortunately, he keeps getting overlooked out here at the shelter and is desperately in need of a loving friend to take him to the beach, on a hike, or to accompany you for a walk or jog around the neighborhood. If you or anyone that you know is currently looking for a new friend to dedicate your heart to in time for Valentines Day, Jack just might be that special sweetheart you are looking for.

“Johnny & Cash”

Please allow us to introduce “Johnny” & “Cash”, they are both 9 week old Burmese Mountain Dog X’s that have been calling Woods Humane Society their home for the last couple of weeks. These two little guys are littermates that joined our adoption program through our partnership with Taft Rescue. They are both neutered, up to date on their vaccinations, micro chipped and ready for a loving home to call their own. There really isn’t much that we can say about these brothers except that they love attention, playtime, and are wanting a family with a large yard and kids to play with. Also, one of the best things that you can give a new puppy is to take them to puppy kindergarten and get them started right away on their obedience training. Taft Rescue is a group of volunteers who rescue litters of pups that would otherwise end up unaltered, unvaccinated, and left in a parking lot with “Free to a good home” written on their box. Our shelter has already placed numerous puppies over the last couple of weeks and we are expecting to see a lot more being brought in. It is vital that potential adopters are familiar with the breed of puppy they adopt, are going to give these wonderful little pups a caring environment, and are prepared to dedicate themselves to taking care of these guys for their entire life. If you or anyone that you know feel as though you can provide a loving home to an adorable pup (who by the way has the potential to grow to 80lbs+) please stop by Woods Humane Society and spend some time getting to know “Johnny”, “Cash” or any of the other truly wonderful canines that call our shelter home.

Milo

Meet “Milo”, he is a 1 ½ year old silver & grey on white Tabby that has been calling Woods Humane Society his home since September 2007. Milo joined our adoption population through our animal transfer program with the SLO Department of Animal Services. He is neutered, vaccinated, micro chipped, and ready for his SLO County Registration when you take him home. He is litter box trained and would prefer to be in indoor/outdoor cat. Milo is somewhat active, doesn’t seem to mind the company of other cats, loves children, and is playful, cuddly, vocal, friendly, and very tolerant. He is a sweet cat who loves affection and getting petted. He has a very mellow disposition and enjoys just lounging around. Plus, he is a very handsome little guy with beautiful markings. Milo is the type of cat that will follow you around purring and meowing until you give him attention. He is a fun cat and is looking for a lifelong, loving home to call his own. If you or anyone that you know is looking to bring a new feline into their life, please stop by our shelter and spend some time getting to know Milo

“Franky”

Please allow us to introduce “Franky” as this week’s featured pet pal. Franky is a 10 month old White & Chocolate Border Collie mix that has been calling Woods Humane Society his home since December. He was brought to Woods through our transfer program with the Santa Maria Animal Services Department. Franky is a newer guest of the shelter, but his story is one that brought him to the top of our feature list. Franky has been living in animal shelters since he was a 2 month old pup and is desperately in need of a loving home. He is very playful, energetic, and an all around fruit cake. Franky would do well with a family with children and also gets along fabulously with other dogs. He is currently up to date on all of his vaccinations, micro chipped, and neutered. Franky is a fun loving pup that through unfortunate circumstances has spent his entire life looking for love in all the wrong places. If you or anyone that you know is looking for a dog to make you laugh, smile, and get outside for walks & hikes, Franky is definitely a great candidate for your love. Please stop by our shelter and spend some time getting know him in one of our shelter’s comfortable “get acquainted rooms”. This little guy is sure to steal your heart and hopefully we can help his horrible string of bad luck change for the better.

“Scooby Doo”

Please allow us to introduce “Scooby Doo”, he is a 5 year old male Chihuahua mix that has called Woods Humane Society his home since June. Scooby was brought to Woods by his previous owner because they had too many dogs and were unable to properly care for him. He is a wonderful “people dog” that loves to go for car rides, walks, and to snuggle up in warm laps. He is also great with kids and other dogs. Scooby Doo loves to play and is housebroken. He also already knows: down, off, settle, sit, stay, in, out, wait, in the house, out of the house, enough, and other voice commands. Scooby Doo loves to go to the beach and to the park and lives to please. He is happy, well mannered, loves to play, and is very attentive. The only problem he has is that he LOVES FOOD so maintaining a feeding time is important. Scooby Doo is also a current participant in our shelter’s “Pet Visitation” program and is visiting local retirement facilities to help bring a smile to resident’s faces. His previous guardians have left their contact information with us at Woods and would welcome any questions you might have about this wonderful little dog. Scooby is desperately in need of a loving home and will make a lovely new companion.

“Remy”

Please allow us to introduce “Remy” as this week’s featured pet. He is a 2 year old brown & black tabby on white Domestic Medium Hair cat that has called our shelter home for the last month. Remy joined our adoption program as a transfer from the San Luis Obispo County Animal Services Department. He is neutered, up to date on his vaccinations, microchiped, and ready for you to stop in and take him home. Remy is looking for a home that is very active and would prefer to lounge around as in indoor cat. He might make a good mouser, but in reality, he is a lover and not a hunter. Remy gets along great with other cats and is completely litter box trained. He also loves kids. Remy is active, playful, affectionate, cuddly, social, outgoing, friendly, and highly tolerant. Remy is a very affectionate little guy who will grab your attention by rolling over on his back and reaching out for you with his paws. He’s very curious – very intelligent – and will be a source of endless amusement with his exploratory antics. He’s also very playful and keeps himself entertained with balls and toys. Once he warms up to you, Remy wants nothing more then to be picked up and snuggled. This handsome little guy will make a great lap cat and best friend.

Blue

Please allow us to introduce “Blue” (aka Mr. Handsome), he is a 4.5 year old, tan and white, Pitbull that has been calling our shelter home since December. Blue joined our adoption program due to his previous owners because they were no longer able to care for him. Blue is a great “people dog” that likes kids. He is very intelligent, and knows numerous commands. Blue wants to please and he will do almost anything for a treat and belly rub. He likes long walks and to play ball. Blue is a neutered male, up to date on his vaccinations, and microchiped. He is also housebroken. Blue’s perfect adopter would be someone who could look past his breed, and see him for the great dog that he truly is. He is looking for a home without other dogs and with a fenced yard. Blue is a “man’s” type dog and would do well riding in the back of the pickup, going on adventures around the county, or hanging out at the construction site. His previous owners left their contact information should anyone have any further questions about Blue. If you or anyone that you know is looking to adopt a loving and loyal new friend, please consider stopping by Woods and getting to know Blue in one of our comfortable “Get Acquainted” rooms. Our staff have all worked one on one with Blue and are always available to assist you. This dog desperately needs to find a home as he has been with us at Woods for an extended amount of time.

FIGERO STILL AVAILABLE!!

Please allow us to introduce “Figero”, he is a 6 year old black & white Domestic Medium Hair (DMH) who has been calling our shelter home since April. Figero is a good boy who just wants attention! Since joining our adoption program, he has lost some weight, which is why he is usually in his own cat condo – so we can monitor his food. The stressful shelter environment hasn’t made this guy any less wonderful of a cat- he is sweet, talkative (meow) and very playful. He is extremely gentle toward people, but doesn’t really like the company of other cats. Figero is cute and loveable and would be a great indoor/outdoor cat in a loving home, possibly with children. He is neutered, micro chipped, and up to date on his vaccinations. Figero is also a very clean cat and always uses his litter box. If you or anyone you know id interested in providing a loving home to one (or more) of the truly amazing felines that are currently calling Woods Humane Society home, we implore you to stop in and visit with them. Pictures can never fully do any of the animals any justice. Also, our reduced adoption fee of only $75 will end on Saturday 6/30.

AUGIE  ADOPTED!!

Please allow us to introduce “Augie”, he is a 9 month old Lab/Giant Schnauzer mix that has been calling our shelter home since June. He is neutered, up to date on his vaccinations, and desperately needing a good home. Augie was transferred to Woods from the Santa Maria Animal Services Department. He has also been a participant in this summer’s Critter Camp and gets along wonderfully with kids. Augie’s ideal home would be a calm spacious place with plenty of yard for him to run and play in. He loves to run and would make a wonderful jogging or hiking partner. He also gets along great with other dogs. NOAH   STILL AVAILABLE!!

Please allow us to introduce “Noah”, he is a 6 year old lab/pit mix that has been calling our shelter his home for the last month. Noah is neutered, up to date on all of his vaccinations, micro-chipped, and house broken. He is great with people and comes complete with basic obedience training. Noah knows, sit, lay down, come. When Noah first joined our adoption program out here at Woods, his left eye was seriously wounded from a previous injury. Thanks to our shelter’s “Crystal Fund” we were able to remove the infected eye and Noah is now pain free. Noah is a really good dog, he loves to play ball and would be an amazing running/jogging partner. When in the house, he is and calm and mellow. He is going to make some lucky adopter a wonderful companion. Noah is helping us continue our August promotion where every black coated animal in our adoption program is currently available for a reduced adoption fee of only $75. If you or anyone that you know is currently looking for a new companion dog or cat, please stop on by our shelter and get to know the wonderful black coated dogs and cats that unfortunately, tend to be overlooked due to their color.

“Gwen”  ADOPTED!!!!!

Please allow us to introduce “Gwen”, she is a 3 year old black coated Domestic Long Hair that has been calling our shelter home for a year and a half. She joined our adoption program back in January of 2006 through our animal transfer program with the San Luis Obispo Municipal Animal Shelter. Gwen is a quite little girl who is very mellow and doesn’t demand a lot of attention. She likes chin scratches, pets, and being brushed, and enjoys spending time by herself. She is always gentle and has stunning yellow eyes. Gwen is very nice and quiet and would love to live in a home that is quiet and warm. She loves to sleep in baskets, is a little shy, but absolutely loves people. She is spayed, micro-shipped, and up to date on all of her vaccinations. Gwen is also a volunteer and staff favorite out here at Woods. If you or anyone that you know is looking for a quiet companion to share your love with, we implore you to stop by our shelter and spend some time getting to know Gwen and the rest of her feline friends. Also, Gwen is helping us continue our Black Coated Promotion and is available for immediate adoption for a reduced adoption fee of only $75. Our shelter currently is need of canned dog food.

“Lenny”  ADOPTED!!

Please allow us to introduce “Lenny”, he is a 2 year old tan& black German Shepherd X that has been calling Woods Humane Society home since the beginning of July. Lenny is one of the dogs that have recently joined our adoption program through our newly established animal transfer program with Los Angeles City Animal Services. Last year, Los Angeles County had to euthanize over 15,000 animals and Woods Humane Society decided that we would do our part to rescue as many canines from potential euthanasia as possible. Lenny is a wonderful dog that loves people, kids, and other dogs. He is a very active dog that is desperately seeking a family to call his own. Lenny is neutered, microchipped, and up to date on all of his vaccinations. Lenny is the dog that will always be willing to go for a run, hike, or just spend a day at the park. If you or anyone that you know is looking for a truly wonderful dog to share your life with, please stop by Woods and spend some time getting to know Lenny in one of our comfortable “Get Acquainted Rooms”. Also, the dogs of Woods are always in need of canned wet food, please keep them in mind the next time you are at the market.

JAKE  ADOPTED!!!

Please allow us to introduce “Jake”, he is a 6 year old Black Lab that has been calling our shelter home for about a month. He is neutered, up to date on all of his vaccinations, and micro-chipped. Jake was brought to our shelter by his previous owner due to them not having enough time to properly care for him. Jake is a very friendly dog that loves people and is a current participant in our summer Critter Camp where kids ages 8-11 are working with him daily out here at Woods. Jake is a also cat friendly and was raised with two feline siblings. He was raised as an outdoor dog and would do wonderfully at a home with a large yard for him to play in. Being middle aged, he is very mellow and would also make a great companion who is away at work for most of the day. He is looking for a new family that will give him the love and attention he deserves, and would do exceptionally well living with other dogs and children. Unfortunately, since he is black coated, he will be passed over by potential adopters while he is staying with us at Woods. If you or anyone that you know is looking for a kind, patient, tolerant, and easy going dog to take on walks, hikes, to the beach and park, we implore you to stop by out here at Woods and spend some time Jake outside of his kennel. But be warned, this dog will easily work his way into your heart. Jake is also helping us kick-start our shelter’s August promotion, where every black coated animal (both dogs & cats) are available for immediate adoption at a reduced adoption fee of only $75.

PEANUT BUTTER  ADOPTED!!!

Please allow us to introduce “Peanut Butter”, he is a seven year old Pit Bull mix that has been calling our shelter home for 2 months. P.B. joined our adoption program because his previous owner could no longer care for him. He was raised with 5 children and two adults. Peanut Butter is an extremely mellow and gentle dog that unfortunately will end up sitting in our shelter for a long period of time due to his breed. He is very well mannered and gets along well with cats and other animals. He loves to go for walks, play fetch, and rid in the car. Peanut Butter is neutered and up to date on all of his vaccinations, and desperately seeking a loving home to call his own. He is even a current participant in this year’s Summer Critter Camp and is working every day out here at Woods with kids ages 8-11. He is a very tolerant dog that will let you do just about anything to him, his favorite thing is to snuggle up and offer his tummy for some rubbing. Peanut Butter is a family dog that was previously allowed to live indoors most of the time. He also knows his basic commands and how to do a couple of tricks; sit, lay, speak, get the ball, etc. He loves to go on adventures to the beach, hiking, parks, around town. Peanut Butter is a loveable, loyal dog with some pretty fantastic facial expressions. He is tolerant and very patient with kids. His ideal adopted family will be one that has a lot of love to give and time to play. His previous owner has offered their contact information should anyone wish to find out more about Peanut Butter and they also left this note on his profile “I got to know this dog over 4 years ago and have never had a dog that could love people as much as Peanut Butter, he could be the poster dog for Pit Bulls”. Peanut Butter is a healthy lad that is currently in the prime of his life, he gets along great with people and animals, and would make a wonderful companion for anyone who is able to look past his breed.

Unfortunately, Pit Bulls tend to have a negative association in our community, it is important to understand that every single dog that enters out adoption program is put through very strict and thorough behavior/temperament assessments prior to being placed into our adoption program. Woods Humane Society cannot place an animal for adoption that we do not feel can be responsibly re-homed into our community. We see a lot of Pit Bulls enter our shelter and only a limited few actually are accepted. The ones that are, are exceptional dogs that (through no fault of their own) will end up sitting in our kennels 2-3 times longer then any other breed. Even dogs that are extremely behavioral will be adopted out before a loving, patient, and highly trained Pit Bull. Also, every dog is different and the Pit Bulls that we currently are caring for are not the same dogs that have gone out and attacked other animals and people. If you or anyone that you know is looking for a wonderful dog that desperately needs a loving home to call his own, I implore to stop by our shelter and spend some time with Peanut Butter in one of our comfortable “Get Acquainted” rooms. Please remember that pictures will never truly do any of our animals any justice.

Please allow us to introduce “Whiskey”, he is a 9 month old Beagle/Hound Mix that has only been calling Woods Humane Society his home for a short time. Whiskey is up to date on all of his vaccinations and is neutered. His previous owners had to give him up due to not having enough time to properly care for and train him. Whiskey is great with kids and is a current participant in this summer’s Critter Camp. He is a loving, high energy puppy, that loves to great and follow people. When he is around children, he always wants to lick and play with them. Whiskey is also great with other dogs and came to us from a home with another dog. His favorite thing to do out here at the shelter is to go out and frolic with all his dog buddies in an exercise yard. He is good on a leash and loves to play fetch. Whiskey is housebroken and also crate trained. This is a loving little pup who is desperately in need of a snuggle partner. He is well socialized and is very easy to train, Whiskey is looking for someone who will take him on adventures, run or walk with him every day, and above all, enroll him in puppy training classes. His previous owner has left contact information at the shelter should you be interested in learning more about this truly amazing and loveable little charmer. If you or anyone you know is looking for a new best friend, a jogging partner, or a playmate for the kids, Whiskey is definitely the dog for you. Please stop in and get to know him outside of his kennel out here at Woods Humane Society.
