Police Chase In Santa Barbara Ends In Crash

A Santa Barbara man is in custody after a high speed chase which ended in a crash and subsequent foot pursuit yesterday afternoon in downtown Santa Barbara.  28-year-old Evan Githens, who was driving a stolen white Chevrolet work truck from Ventura, was chased down and arrested by Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Deputies. He is charged with child endangerment, felony evasion, being in possession of a stolen vehicle, multiple vehicle code violations and a probation violation.  He is being held at the Santa Barbara County Jail on $100,000 bail.

The incident began at approximately 3:50 p.m., when Sheriff’ Deputies observed the stolen vehicle being driven on Highway 101 approaching the southbound Carrillo Street exit.  Sheriff’s Deputies attempted to pull the vehicle over but the suspect refused to yield and sped off down Carrillo Street, turned onto Castillo Street at a high rate of speed and ran through several stop signs. Santa Barbara County Air Support Unit Copter 2 assisted Sheriff’s Deputies with the pursuit.  The suspect got back onto the freeway at Haley and Castillo Streets and then exited again at Arrellaga Street before crashing into two vehicles at the intersection of Arrellaga and De La Vina Streets.  After the crash, the suspect jumped out of the stolen car and ran southbound on De La Vina Street.  Sheriff’s Deputies chased the suspect over several fences and through backyards before he was apprehended at gunpoint.

An adult passenger and two small boys, ages six and four, were found in the stolen vehicle.  Sheriff’s Deputies detained the female passenger who was later released after being questioned.  She and the four year old boy were not injured but the six year old boy was transported to a local hospital where he was treated and released.  The single occupants of the other two vehicles involved, a green Jeep Wrangler and dark grey Honda CRV received injuries and were transported to the hospital.
