Police Use Teens In Citywide Tobacco Compliance Check

CigarettesLast Tuesday, the San Luis Obispo Police Department, in cooperation with the San Luis Obispo County Public Health’s Tobacco Control Program, conducted a citywide tobacco sales compliance check operation.

The compliance check utilized the help of two local teens who attempted to purchase tobacco at 44 locations.  Five clerks of the 44 stores sold tobacco to the teen.  One clerk did not ask the minor for identification.  

During the compliance check the five stores that sold tobacco to the underage teens were

7-11 at 1301 Monterey St, Cloud 9 at 584 California Blvd.,Conserve Fuel at 254 Santa Rosa St, The Sanctuary Tobacco Shop at 1111 Chorro St., and Laguna Smokes at 1560 Los Osos Valley Rd.

In the ongoing effort to reduce youth access to tobacco, consistent checks of this type are conducted in cities and unincorporated areas throughout the county.  It is illegal to furnish tobacco products to anyone under the age of 18.
