Prescribed Burn Today In Atascadero Part Of Training Exercise

wild-fireThe Department of Forestry and Fire Protection in cooperation with local landowners and San Luis Obispo County APCD will be conducting a 25-acre prescribed burn today at the eastern end of Santa Clara Road in southeast Atascadero.

The burn is being conducted as a training exercise to provide fire crews with the opportunity to use live fire and gain valuable experience using prudent ignition and containment techniques.

People in the Santa Margarita/Atascadero/Templeton area and/or traveling Highway 101 will see smoke on the southeast side of Atascadero near Santa Clara Road from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM.    During this period, smoke is expected to be visible for approximately two hours.

In the unlikely event you smell smoke, County officials urge you to take precautions and use common sense to reduce harmful health effects by limiting outdoor activities.  The prescribed burn is being coordinated with the San Luis Obispo County Air Pollution Control District and the California Air Resources Board in order to minimize the smoke impacts on surrounding communities.

The project is dependent on weather and will be carried out during favorable atmospheric conditions that provide adequate consumption and smoke dispersal.  If the conditions are not correct, the burn will be rescheduled.
