Sales Tax Proposal Gets Unanimous Votes

The Atascadero City Council voted unanimously yesterday to prepare a proposal for June 24 for the council to put a half percent sales tax increase on the Nov. 4 ballot. The sales tax would be increased from 7.5 percent to 8 percent for 10 years and is expected to generate 1.7 million to 2 million dollars annually, which the council said will go towards fixing the city’s roads. Atascadero residents who spoke at the meeting generally favored the tax hike as long as the money specifically went to fixing the roads. The city council also proposed creating a citizens advisory committee to oversee how the revenue generated from the tax increase is used if the measure passes. The total cost of placing the measures on the ballot is estimated to be about $10,000 and would be paid out of the general fund.
