Santa Barbara Sheriff’s Employee Arrested On Theft Charges

Mary-MethmannMary Methmann, a non-sworn Administrative Office Professional for the Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Office was arrested on February 6 for residential burglary in the first degree.

Prior to the arrest, a criminal investigation was initiated by Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Detectives on February 4, following the theft of a significant amount of jewelry from a Goleta residence.  The stolen jewelry was valued in excess of $10,000.00.  During the investigation, Detectives discovered evidence which implicated Methmann in the burglary.

A warrant for her arrest was authorized, as was a search warrant for her residence.  The 47-year-old Methmann was arrested by Sheriff’s Detectives at her Carpinteria apartment, and was later booked into the Santa Barbara County Jail with bail set at $50,000.00. The District Attorney’s Office has yet to review this burglary case.

On January 4, the Sheriff’s Office received a complaint alleging that Methmann stole $50.00 from the Sheriff’s Office.  On January 29, Methmann was placed on administrative leave following the conclusion of a criminal investigation which linked her to that theft-related crime while she worked at her position in Custody Records at the Sheriff’s Office main jail facility.

This internal theft case has been submitted to the Santa Barbara County District Attorney’s Office which has already reviewed the case and will be prosecuting.
