On Sunday April 21, at about 1:41 p.m., Grover Beach Police Officers were dispatched to the 300 block of Beckett Street for a report of an assault in progress. As the first officer was arriving on scene, additional 911 calls came into the Grover Beach Police Dispatch Center requesting medical assistance at the same location.
As the first officer contacted the group involved in the calls for service, he discovered 69-year-old Benjamin Carroll Sr. who was not breathing and did not have a pulse. The officer initiated CPR and was assisted by an additional arriving officer until medical personnel arrived on scene.
The preliminary investigation revealed a neighbor dispute between Carroll, his 32-year-old son Benjamin Carroll, Jr. and their neighbor, 54-year-old Jerry Odom. During the altercation Odom physically assaulted both victims knocking them to the ground. It was during this altercation that Carrol went into cardiac arrest. He was transported to a local area hospital where he is listed in critical condition.
Odom was booked into the San Luis Obispo County Jail on charges of assault with a deadly weapon, elder abuse and battery. His bond is currently set at $50,000.
